Traditional oast houses with their cylindrical kilns were used in the 1800s for drying hops to make beers and ales. Later replaced by easier to control and construct square kilns, oast houses became a thing of the past.
Many oast houses still remain to this day, particularly in Kent. Many have been converted for other uses including garages - just like this one.

Big Ben - Anniversary Edition Lilliput Lane Big Ben - Anniversary Edition Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

Big Ben is actually the thirteen-ton hour bell inside this magnificent Victorian Gothic Revival fretted stone clock tower and is said to be named after the commissioner of works in charge of the re-building of the Palace of Westminster, better known as the Houses of Parliament.

Etched around the base of this special edition are some important dates linked to Big Ben: 1834, parliament was destroyed by fire and the new building commissioned; 1858, the Great Bell, nicknamed Big Ben, was cast at Whitechapel Bell Foundry; 1859, Big Ben was installed and the chimes rang out for the first time; and in 1923, Big Ben's chimes were broadcast on the radio for the first time at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve - a tradition that still takes place to this day.

Braywood Lodge Lilliput Lane Braywood Lodge Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

Oakley Green, as the name suggests, was an oak clearing in the ancient Windsor Forest used by drovers to graze their sheep. The village gradually grew up around this, thanks to its situation along the packhorse route from Reading to Windsor.

Built in 1869 for Jean Sylvain Van de Weyer, the Belgium Minister to the Royal Court, this timbered lodge on the Braywood Estate, was the lodge house to his impressive New Lodge. It owes its distinctive appearance to the band of darker brick running through its red brick walls, echoed in the hung tiles, which are laid in alternating double courses of orange and black. Other features include the pierced and carved bargeboards, decorative timbering and its unusual white fencing patterned with squares and crosses.

Fountains Abbey Lilliput Lane Fountains Abbey Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

With the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 the abbey ceased to function and eventually, in 1767, it was purchased (for £18,000) by William Aislabie, as an additional magnificent view from the Studley Water Garden that had been created by his father.

Maintained by English Heritage, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, is a World Heritage Site owned by the National Trust. This beautiful Cistercian Abbey (founded in 1132 by thirteen exiled Benedictine Monks) has been sculpted by Lilliput Lane before, way back in 1994, when it was a considerably complicated piece to assemble, and had to be manufactured in thirteen pieces at that time! It formed the centrepiece of the USA exclusive, Studley Royal Collection.

Granny's Summerhouse Lilliput Lane Granny's Summerhouse Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

This attractive Grade II Listed building can be found in the grounds of Charlecote Park, which was built in the 1550s by Sir Thomas Lucy and has remained the seat of the Lucy family for the last eight hundred year or more!

During that time it has enjoyed many famous connections, including Queen Elizabeth I (who stayed for two days in 1572), Capability Brown (who lanscaped the grounds), Nelson (who is believed to have slept in the ebony bed on display in the house), and the not-so-welcome William Shakespere, who is said to have been caught poaching deer (no wonder he ran off to London to seek fortune and fame!).

Built of brick, with rustic timbering, thatched roof and gorgeous stained glass windows, this summerhouse was built in the mid-nineteenth century for Lady Mary Elizabeth Lucy with the intention of being used as a summerhouse for her grandchildren - hence the name Granny's Summerhouse!

Harbury Windmill Lilliput Lane Harbury Windmill Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

The name of Harbury is said to be derived from Hereburgh, a local female tribe chief of around 500BC. Built in the early ninteenth century, Harbury's old windmill fell into disuse in the early 1950s but has now been lovingly renovated, minus the sails, into a luxurious home near Stratford-upon-Avon.

Situated in the centre of Harbury, its round tapering six-storey tower is a fine example of a typical tower mill of the period. The lower section of the tower is built of regular limestone and the upper part of English bond brick. The cap originally revolved in the wind to turn four sails that would, in turn, have turned its millstones, right up until just before the First World War, when it was converted enabling it to be powered by steam, later oil, then electricity.

Home Of The Brontes Lilliput Lane Home Of The Brontes Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

Veritable Mecca for admirers of the literary achievements of the Bronte family, Haworth Parsonage is now a museum and is situated at the top of the town's Main Street. This is the second time that this wonderful Georgian building has been sculpted; the first was back in 1985 (Bronte Parsonage).
The Brontes moved from Thornton to Haworth Parsonage in 1820 where their father, Patrick Bronte, was to serve the parish until the end of his days. Charlotte's Jane Eyre, Emily's Wuthering Heights, and Jane's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall were all written here - the authors no doubt being inspired by the wild, bleak landscape around them and the somewhat austere apperance of their home. The impressive building was built in the late 1770s from dark dressed millstone grit with a stone slate roof. The wing on the right is a later addition, after the Brontes' time here.

Ladies Lodge Lilliput Lane Ladies Lodge Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

This delightful octagonal timber-framed lodge was built sometime between the early and mid nineteenth century and as well as its unusual shape, it has many other features worthy of a mention: the thin studded timber frame has painted white brick 'noggin' infill, there are rusticated tree trunks supporting the roof (although they are decorative rather than structural!), a rather attractive open veranda offers a sheltered place to rest, and the lovely gabled open porch over the front door.
Given its small size, it may come as a surprise to discover that this charming building was actually used as a school for girl during part of the nineteenth century, which is why this version is called Ladies's Lodge!

Found in Tiverton, this charming pair of red brick mirror-image residences with honeycomb lozenge windows and large central shared chimneystack - which gives the impression on first glance that this is one large house rather than two - is typical of the many delightful Peckforton Estae cottages to be found in the area.
John Tollemache, First Baron Tollemache, purchased the estate in the mid-1840s and he had many farms and houses built to house estate workers, as well as the nearby mock medieval castle mansion, Peckforton Castle.

Little Moreton Hall 2009 Anniversary Cottages Lilliput Lane Little Moreton Hall 2009 Anniversary Cottages Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

This grand residence owes its creation, and name, to Sir Richard de Moreton, who inherited the land and decided to build a new home here. He had it built in the latest style of the day, i.e. an elaborate wooden frame of the finest local oak with wattle and daub infill, all resting on stone footings (there were no foundations in those times!).
Moreton's wealth is evident in the intricacy of the patterns created by the diagonal studwork; decorative rather than functional its series of zigzagging chevrons is breathtaking. The Great Hall and east wing both date to around 1450, with the porch and west wing being added around 1480, at which time the remarkably long gallery - stretching across most of the top floor - was added to. The house is completely surrounded by a moat, which is, in turn, surrounded by beatuiful gardens.

Millbeck Smithy Lilliput Lane Millbeck Smithy Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

With its whitewashed slate rubble walls and slate roof with round slate chimneys, this little smithy dates back to the early eighteenth century and is a real Lakeland architectural gem!
This lovely little building can be found at the bottom of a garden in the beautiful tiny village of Millbeck - not many people can claim to have a former blacksmith's shop at the bottom of their garden! Now a peaceful, tranquil area, it was once a hive of industry, as during the late nineteenth century woollen mills at Applethwaite and Millbeck prodeced blankets, bonnets and caps that were sold all over the world!

This beautiful cottage was once the home of Roald Dahl's mother, Sofie Dahl, and is mentioned in the famous children's author's autobiography, Going Solo, where he records returning home after World War Two, only to find that she had moved to the countryside to escape the bombing.
'She was a great teller of tales...' he once said of his mother 'a rock, a real rock, always on your side whatever you'd done. It gave me a tremendous feeling of security'. But perhaps his best tribute to her was that he based the 'grandmother' character in The Witches on her!

Mow Cop Castle 2009 Anniversary Cottages Lilliput Lane Mow Cop Castle 2009 Anniversary Cottages Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

Built of local millstone grit, this impressice Grade-II-Listed castle is not all that it appears to be at first sight. It is in fact a folly, built in 1754 as a summerhouse for the Wilbraham family of Rode Hall, Cheshire, and therefore not really a castle at all!
When Randle Wilbraham built his romantic ruin on the skylines, however, he did not take into account the fact that it was built on the county boundaries and that half lay in Staffordshire and half in Cheshire. This led to neighbouring landowners, the Sheyds, succesfully claiming part ownership of the folly though the courts, on the proviso that they shared the maintenance costs and allowed public access. It is now owned by the National Trust.

The perfect accompaniment to Moreton Hall, Chesire (the first 2009 Anniversary Cottage), which is only a few miles away from Mow Cop Castle

Peasants Cottage Lilliput Lane Peasants Cottage Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

With its timber frame and noggin brick infill, decorative bargeboarding and thatched roof, its hard to imagine that this idyllic cottage was once a humble peasants' home - in fact much of the picturesque village of Osmaston was built around the mid 1800s as a major redevelopment scheme to provide housing for the estate workers of Osmaston Manor, which is why it's referred to as an estate village.
Osmsaton Manor was built by Francis Wright, of the family of Nottingham bankerswhose fortune was made through Butterfly Ironworks near Ripley, Derbyshire - the builders of St. Pancras Station, no less! This model depicts a nostalgic scene of one estate labourer who, after a hard day's work, has returned home, left his boots and tools outside and retired inside for a warm meal and a rest in front of the cosy fire.

Pixie House Boscastle Lilliput Lane Pixie House Boscastle Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

Perhaps the most photographed building in Boscastle, this wonderful Grade-II-Listed building was originally built (in the early 1800s) as a stable, but today it serves two purposes, both of which are very much appreciated by eager tourists!
Famed for its wobbly roofline, The Pixie House (Harbour Lights) suffered terribly from the floods of 2004 that devastated the village. Thankfully, it was rebuilt and so remains a Mecca for visitors from near and far - all of whom should take care, however, not to upset the Pixies. Clad in green, these old, wizened little people with red hair and pointed ears enjoy playing tricks and pranks, and are renowned for misleading travellers; and he who has not the foresight to carry a wicken-cross, or piece of bread, can only escape by turning his coat inside out - you have been warned!

Limited Edition of 995 pieces

This wonderful gatehouse has been inspired by Brockenhurst Park's North Lodge, which was designed and built (along with the House) in the French Renaissance style in 1869 by T H Wyatt, a prolific and eminent Victorian architect.
The brick and stone dressings, slate roof and lead ridges are common enough features of the time, but it is the splendid Trapezoidal French roof and smaller French ogee roof that mke a striking statement, even to this day! The stone sculptures of hunting dogs and the little hare have been added to this model to represent the heritage of the surrounding New Forest, which was created by William the Conqueror as his own personal hunting ground.

The Plot Room Lilliput Lane The Plot Room Lilliput Lane

New For 2009

The manor of Ashby St Ledgers was the home of the Catesbys and in the early 1600s, a certain Robert Catesby spent much time visiting his widowed mother here.
Today, road signs state that the narrow road into the tiny village is a 'gated road' and, although there are no gates now, this gives some indication as to how secluded this location once was. The perfect place for conspirators to meet in secrecy and plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in fact, for this half-timbered gatehouse to the manor is reputed to be the meeting place used by the Gunpowder Plotters in 1605 - which explains why this little 'plot room' includes barrels of gunpowder!

Can you spot the telescope? Well, another person, held on suspicion of being involved but later released, was one Thomas Harriot, who is also known as the first man to attempt to map the moon.

Situated high up on Blackford Hill, three miles south of the city centre, the Royal Observatory of Edinburgh is a magnificent sight to behold, and has been described as a Graeco-Roman fantasy. Visitors can view a number of exhibits on modern astronomy, optics and space, as well as enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the city. This is only part of the impressive 180-feet-long sandstone building built in 1892-3 by W W Robertson - an octagonal tower surmounted by its distinguished weathered copper cylindrical telescopic housings, plus a few of the many astronomical references included in the external decoration.

Tollemache Arms Lilliput Lane Tollemache Arms Lilliput Lane

New 2009

Situated on a hill above the Ise Valley, the quiet village of Harrington (recorded as Arintone in the Domesdsay Book) benefits from spectacular views of the surrounding rolling countryside, which is perhaps why so many people frequent this charming old pub during the summer months, when excellent food and ale is served in the gardens with such fantastic views on offer!
Serving visitors since 1547, this wonderful inn was named after the Reverend Hugh Tollemache, the rector of Harrington for fifty-eight years who, in 1890 died at the grand old age of eighty-seven and is buried in the local churchyard. It may seem somewhat unusual to name a pub after a man of God, but it was the brainchild of his successor, the Reverend Atkins, who bought the pub in the 1800s and closed it on Sundays in an attempt to boost his church's attendance.
